The Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Montenegro will, at its extraterritorial unit in Bijelo Polje, where the undergraduate applied study program Continental Fruit Growing and Medicinal Herbs is being implemented, from the 2020/21 academic year have a master's degree in the application of the study program Continental Fruit Growing and Medicinal Herbs.

"Having in mind that in the northern region of Montenegro, especially in the region of Polimlje, significant areas of agricultural land are under continental fruit species, such as apple, plum, pear, raspberry, strawberry ..., it is clear that the implementation of this study program is of great importance for development of agriculture and the northern region and Montenegro in general, " the Vice-Dean for teaching at this faculty, Snježana Hrnčić, PhD, said.

In addition, she points out, students will gain new knowledge practically on the doorstep and have the opportunity to immediately apply it in practice, either on their own farm or in the economy - small and medium enterprises that exist in this area.

Vice-Dean Hrnčić expressed expectation that all students who complete their undergraduate studies this academic year will continue their education, and that a certain number of students who have previously completed their undergraduate or specialist studies in Bijelo Polje will choose to continue their education at master's studies.

She added that all students who have completed undergraduate or applied academic study programs in the field of agriculture related to plant production with 180 ECTS credits can enroll in master studies in Continental Fruit Growing and Medicinal Plants.

"Studies in Bijelo Polje are a chance for everyone for whom agriculture is already a choice, but also for those who are on the verge of a life decision, where to go next. In addition to fruit production, which has a special taste and smell in this part of Montenegro, fruit species and medicinal and spice plants, this natural potential is still not sufficiently exploited. Therefore, studies provide an opportunity to improve the situation in this sector as well, “Hrnčić said. According to her, after completion of this study program, graduates will be able to apply practical knowledge and organize raising orchards and plantations of medicinal plants, as well as knowledge of organic production of continental fruits. They will also be able to manage application of technologies in the production of fruit brandies; to apply the rules of phytosanitary correctness of planting material, calculate economic indicators in fruit production and formulate recommendations for increasing the economic profitability of production. In addition, they will be able to apply the legislation in the field of production of continental fruit species and remedy plants, as well as to assess the possibility of using biomass of agricultural products.
