Call of the European Commission for Experienced Researchers

Call of ERC Advanced Grant within the pillar Excellence in Science is open. European Commission will through this call finance researchers with experience who are in phase of career development with recognised references on research achievements.

This call is open for researchers of all nationalities and age who intend to conduct research in any of the Member State (EU MS) or affiliated country (AC), including mother country, or institutions, who are in advanced phase of the career (so called Advanced Grants) and independent in their research with proved experience, skills for team management and research.

Projects financed by ERC are the best researches in Europe and they are awarded to scientists strictly based on their excellence of research work. Projects must be ambitious, contributing to shifting limits in science, and they have to be extremely innovative and nonconventional. Scientists should present portfolio as evidence for excellent research results for the past 10 years.

Manager of the research may be anywhere in the world in the moment of applying, but the research and ERC grant must be implemented in EU MS/AC. At the moment of applying the manager does not have to be employed in the host institution (Host Institution – university, research centre, institute, industry…) but while the project lasts he/she has to be. Time dedicated by the manager to the ERC project represents minimum of 30% of total working hours.

Project is steered by the manager in cooperation with host institution and the manager’s team. Host institution is obliged to provide best conditions for research manager as well as quality financial implementation of the project. It is common that the whole team comes from the same institution as well as the research manager. If there is reasonable justification, team members may be in other institution, either from manager’s country in EU MS or AC, or outside Europe.

Team members may be of any age, origin, academic status (researchers with experience, post PhDs, PhD students). The usual structure: manager + older researchers + post PhDs + PhD students + foreign associates.

Focus is on the support to interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, trans disciplinary projects which erase borders among scientific disciplines. ERC projects are characterised by innovative approach to research in new fields (emerging fields) and shifting borders in science. Excellence is the only evaluation criterion – excellence of both researcher and proposals of projects.

For this call there are no predetermined quotes for states, regions, or for a researcher’s gender –insisting on openness and accessibility.

Support level is up to 2.5 million per project, which lasts up to five years. There is possibility for additional 1 million Euros for initial costs for moving the research in MS/Ac or for purchase of capital equipment.

Until today, ERC has published more than one hundred thousand publications, out of which seven per cent is ranked in one per cent of the most quoted; thanks to that, the first time ERC has “outpaced” USA in number of the most quoted publications.

For assessment of ERC Advanced Grant proposals ERC panels are in charge, which encompass all fields of science, divided into three main research domains:

Physical and Engineering sciences: 10 panels

Natural sciences: 9 panels

Social sciences and humanities: 6 panels

Manager defines on his/her own which panel the project proposal is submitted to.

The call is open until August 31st, 2017.
