This weekend, the employees of the Rectorate of the University of Montenegro visited the Boka Aquarium, within the Institute of Marine Biology, organized by the Union of the University of Montenegro and its representative, Slavica Labović. The aquarium, on an area of 300 square meters, is located in the Kotor Palace Radoničić, which is a cultural monument of Montenegro and is also the seat of the Institute of Marine Biology.

The manager of "Aquarium Boka", Mirko Đurović, PhD, told the employees of the Rectorate how the development of this project went.

The project is worth 1.17 million euros. Funds for the project were provided by the Norwegian Embassy in Belgrade with a donation of 0.75 million euros and the Montenegrin Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management in the amount of 0.37 million euros.

“With donations and support, among others from the University of Montenegro, we managed not only to create a scientific research base but also to give new tourist value to Montenegro", said Đurović, who completed the picture of living life in the Adriatic with accompanying explanations.

“All species found in the aquarium were procured in cooperation with local fishermen and their adaptation to the new environment required special effort. In the glazed new homes, they are combined so that they function harmoniously, as well as in the natural habitat, including the necessary natural cleaners. There are also dangerous ones, such as spider fish, famous for the pain caused by bites, and Aquarium employees strictly take care of protective equipment when cleaning the aquarium of these fish, or even more dangerous species of murine (Muraena Helena), so-called skunk, dangerous bite and poisonous blood", stated Đurović.

He also presented the pest of the Adriatic, an invasive blue crab that has no natural enemy, multiplies quickly and is a threat to smaller crabs, juvenile fish, and especially to fishing nets that tear easily. The only way to combat it is by hunting, and as this cancer is on the menus of world restaurants and has its commercial value, the Institute of Biology must strive to raise the awareness of local caterers about the value of this cancer. For now, in the kitchens of the Montenegrin coast, blue crab is marginalized.

Such stories about the hidden world of the Boka and the Adriatic are most interesting to elementary school students who are frequent visitors to the Institute. IBM will seek to launch an initiative to introduce visits to the Aquarium in the school's extracurricular activities, to enable children to be educated for free about the underwater world of the Adriatic.

The representative of the University of Montenegro Union, Slavica Labović, congratulated, on behalf of the employees, on the successful realization of the Aquarium Boka project, for which IBM had the support of the employees, and added that the employees of the Rectorate will continue to support the Institute. She expressed her gratitude for the welcome and exhaustive presentation of the Aquarium Boka.
