Henrik Enderlein Prize for excellence in the social sciences for young researchers

The Call for the newly created Henrik Enderlein Prize for excellence in the social sciences is open for nominations.

The prize is awarded annually to a European researcher under the age of forty, whose work is considered to have made an outstanding contribution in her or his field. Honouring the memory of Professor Henrik Enderlein, late president of the Hertie School in Berlin and alumnus of Sciences Po in Paris, the prize recognises the value of original ideas and research that are both judged as excellent within the scientific community and relevant for public affairs and social cohesion in Europe.

The prize is awarded jointly by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the German Federal Foreign Office, the Hertie School in Berlin and Sciences Po in Paris, and is supported by the newspapers Handelsblatt and Les Echos. The award carries a monetary prize of 10,000 euros.

Candidates can be nominated or self-nominate themselves. All candidates must:

  • have a record of scientific excellence in the social sciences, with a particular focus on economics, political science, sociology, or related fields and disciplines
  • be less than forty years old by the end of the calendar year that precedes the award ceremony (i.e. born in or after 1982 for the 2022 prize)
  • hold citizenship from the European Union or work for a research institution located within the European Research Area

Nominations should be submitted in English language to centreeurope.daie[at]sciencespo[dot]fr no later than 20 April 2022.

Additional guidance from the selection committee

  • The committee will consider on equal footing applications from candidates doing research in different fields of social sciences.
  • The committee will base its assessment on the excellence, relevance and impact of a candidate’s research. To this end it will consider publications in academic journals as well as contributions to public policy and the public debate.

Application files must include:

  • An application letter (max 750 words) from the candidate or a person nominating her;
  • A summary presentation (max 1000 words) of the candidate’s research and policy work of relevance for the application;
  • A CV;
  • Three publications (maximum) for consideration by the selection committee.

Candidates may request that the age threshold be applied flexibly for justifiable reasons, such as caregiver duties and health-related reasons.

Please submit your application as one single PDF file.

The prize committee is composed of ten people and includes representatives from the two universities, the Foreign Offices and the media partners, as well as four additional scholars recognised for their work in a diverse set of social science disciplines. The committee will select the prize recipient after due scrutiny and collective discussion of scientific merits and impact beyond academia.

The Call is open until April 20th 2022
