The University of Montenegro has been rewarded the prestigious Council of Europe award for „Holistic Approach Towards Academic Integrity“, which was received today in Strasbourg on behalf of the University of Montenegro by the Vice-rector for Internationalization Prof. Dr. Sanja Peković and the Vice-rector for Science Prof. Dr. Irena Orović.

The awards were handed at the annual conference and the award ceremony held within the Best Practice Programme of the Council of Europe, which was established with a view of rewarding institutions and academic staff whose academic integrity promotion can serve as a model and inspiration to others.

The first call for the best practices attracted 46 higher education institutions from 23 member states, nine of which were rewarded the prestigious reward, among which also the University of Montenegro, as the only Western Balkan university. The application Dilemma Game developed by Erasmus University in Rotterdam was elected the best practice of the first cycle 2021. This application is intended for researchers, helping them to in their further development and in building their own „moral compass“.

Every praised and rewarded practice is assessed based on six criteria: participation of stakeholders, values the practice is based on, efficiency, effectiveness, replicability and sustainability.

The event, organized on the eve of International Anti-corruption Day, gathered more than 100 participants, representatives of governments, academic community, students and other professionals. They had an opportunity to become familiar with positive practices of setting up mechanisms and tools for promoting and strengthening ethics, transparency and integrity at higher education institutions.

The Vice-rector for Internationalization Prof. Dr. Sanja Peković presented good practice example of the University of Montenegro, speaking on the topic „ Holistic Approach Towards Academic Integrity “.

One of the main messages of the meeting was that higher education cannot be of high quality or educate future generations in a quality manner unless all actors in education themselves practice academic integrity.

The Council of Europe has been working on promoting and ensuring quality education for decades. An outcome of this work is also the establishment of the platform to promote ethics, transparency and integrity (ETINED Platform), which is based on the idea that quality education will be achieved and corruption successfully addressed only if all relevant sectors in the society entirely dedicate themselves to positive ethical principles. It is precisely on this idea that the Good practice programme is based.
