Expanding Cooperation with Scientific and Higher Education Institutions of Cyprus Considered
Expanding cooperation between higher education and scientific research institutions of Cyprus and the University of Montenegro was the reason for the meeting of the rector of the UMNE, Vladimir Božović, PhD and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus in Montenegro, with headquarters in Belgrade, HE Dimitrios Theophylactou.
Rector Božović presented the University of Montenegro and its continuous development not only as a higher education but also as a scientific research institution, which achieves remarkable results in the field of science, bearing in mind the limited possibilities of the budget, which is mostly intended for employee salaries.
He pointed out that much larger budgetary investments in science are needed and that universities of similar capacity in the region, in terms of human resources and number of students, have a much larger budget.
"Of course, the University of Montenegro strives to use international funds and to strengthen the capacities of higher education and scientific research through project activity. Recently, we achieved an unprecedented success of the University, in that in the first call of the new cycle of Erasmus + capacity building projects in the field of higher education (CBHE) for 2021-2027, we received approval for as many as 14 projects, two of which as coordinating institutions", Rector Božović said.
When it comes to education, he added, UMNE shall, as a state university, maintain the quality of higher education with expectation that the labor market will recognize that quality.
He agreed with Ambassador Teofilaktou that it is very important to connect with diaspora, that is, to receive support from alumni, former students of the University. This is precisely the goal of one of the recently approved projects of the University, which, in cooperation with international higher education institutions, will coordinate a similar initiative, which is also needed at other, neighboring universities. The University of Montenegro has signed a bilateral agreement with the University of Cyprus, and funds have been approved for financing the exchange of students and staff within the Eramus + program with the University of Nicosia. Ambassador Teophylaktu presented the possibilities of expanding cooperation with higher education and scientific institutions of Cyprus, and indicated that he especially sees the possibility in the field of medicine, natural sciences, and connections in the field of sports. He particularly emphasized the good opportunities provided by the Cyprus Institute, as an international scientific, technological and educational organization, which represents the center of research and innovation for the Eastern Mediterranean region. This Institute, Amabasdor pointed out, deals with problems of regional and global importance, among which are climate changes, but also innovations, entrepreneurship, cultural heritage, computer sciences and the like. At the meeting, it was agreed to connect at the institutional level, in the direction of further development of cooperation in the field of science and education.
