Student Parliament UMNE through Line of Activities Celebrated International Day of Students
On the occasion of November 17, International Students Day, celebrated all over the world, the Student Parliament of the University of Montenegro (UMNE) held a ceremonial reception hence marking a significant date, the eighteenth anniversary of its existence, and at the same time a unique historical moment, a reminder of the struggle of the fallen students of the University in Prague in 1939.
The evening was marked by the handing over of a humanitarian voucher to the "Be humane" foundation, as well as the performance of a speech by Miloš Kašćelan, a student of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts from Cetinje. The film "Our 18 Years" was also shown.
At the event held in the University Sports and Cultural Center of UMNE, history and work of the umbrella student organization of UMNE, problems they face, as well as ways to overcome them, were presented. Representatives of the academic community, the diplomatic corps, media, as well as youth and student organizations who responded to the invitation met with them tonight.
Vice-rector for teaching at UMNE Veselin Mićanović, PhD explained that this is a big day for monitoring what was done in the previous period and presenting the future strategy.
"Today is the time when praise and awards should be given to students who have shown enviable results thus being our best ambassadors for the future promising development of society. We need to express new needs and fight for new rights that should be objective and based on dignity of our studies. The administration of UMNE, with all its units, is eager and good partner in cooperation with student organizations and the parliament. All models were equally involved in making key decisions. Rights should be fought for and new demands should be made. Obligations should also be set objectively, since thats the only way we can be the most useful firstly to ourselves and to society," Mićanović said.
President of the UMNE Student Parliament, Andrej Vukčević, used the opportunity to emphasize that students have always been an important part of the mechanism that introduces changes and improves society, as well as that by uniting they fought for both their own and other peoples rights. "When it comes to those who did not see fit to organize this event with their presence, I believe that, with respect to the exceptions, they only confirmed our thesis that there is, to put it mildly, a lot of space in the relationship between the decision-makers and a good number of social factors towards the student population for progress. Only as an integrated and coordinated student unit may we succeed in achieving our efforts. Although, fortunately, the circumstances under we live, work and study today are significantly better than those in 1939, the value of togetherness in the student population has not lost its importance at all. International Student Day is a celebration of multiculturalism, diversity and cooperation among students around the world. A better tomorrow cannot be achieved without a progressive and proactive student population that is ready to face the challenges of modern society. Before us is a common mission to make the student population a category of society whose voice is heard and whose interests are respected. Thats why we encourage student activism, involvement in social processes and social life," Vukčević said and added that only through education we can overcome all challenges, which will enable them to effectively contribute to their community as young people.
From Prague, after the end of the 83rd session of the Assembly of the European Student Union, its president Matteo Vespa addressed the audience via video. The European Student Union was founded 40 years ago and over decades has become a crucial actor in the European area of higher education.
"Preserving the memory of the past and recognizing the importance of unity at the European level and the unity of the student movement is the reason why all national student unions are gathered here. With this message, we want to convey how important Montenegrin students are for our community," Vespa said.
Vice-President of the umbrella student body of students of Serbia, SKONUS, Ognjen Obradović, indicated that during the previous years, UMNE represented an important partner in the cooperation process.
"It is a special honor and I have to admit that I am personally pleased to be able to address you today, because cooperation with the Student Parliament of UMNE is of great importance to us. The previous year, we signed an Agreement on cooperation in the field of student organization as the two umbrella bodies of students in Serbia and Montenegro. Our cooperation resulted in a large number of joint activities and improvement of study conditions in both countries. We consulted together during the corona virus pandemic. We networked the faculties of our universities, and with that move they improved the visibility of their work and student activism," Obradović concluded.
UniverCity 2 Successfully Achieved with Support by the Student Parliament of the University of Montenegro
Students had the opportunity to enjoy diverse urban-cultural, educational and musical content of the second edition of The UniverCity 2 festival for five days at three locations. An exhibition of the Belgrade and Split design scene on the walls of the EEF, then a masterclass workshop on audio-visual production and a forum on systemic support for culture in the CKZ Ribnica, and for the very end - a central musical performance by Berlin resident DJs in the sports hall of the University and the grandiose hall of the EEF. Driven by an odd enthusiasm and sincere love for their city, more than a dozen people organized by KRŠ Production, together with the Student Cultural Center and the Student Parliament of UMNE organized an event that attracted thousands of interested visitors. She was particularly impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of the students and young people, who showed that they have immeasurable potential. Podgorica definitely needs a festival like this, which presents content from different spheres, adjusted and intended, first of all, for the expectations of the local audience. A festival that will also attract regional interest and brand Podgorica as a university, cultural and educational-entertainment center.
