Rector of the University of Kragujevac, Nenad Filipović, PhD, assessed that events such as the scientific symposium organized at the University of Montenegro in cooperation with the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, under the name Science and a small country - Synergy of diaspora, motherland and friends of Montenegro, contribute to strengthening ties between diaspora and motherland.

Dr. Filipović is a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and head of the Center for Bioengineering at the University of Kragujevac, Serbia. In his cup of tea, biomedical engineering, he says that there is good cooperation with scientists from the University of Montenegro.

UMNE: You are one of those who had the experience of working abroad, since you were a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, but you returned and brought that experience to Serbia?

FILIPOVIĆ, PhD: I have spent several years on a prestigious Harvard University in Boston. I came back to Serbia and made a great team of young researchers. We work on a very interesting projects from the field of applying technics in medicine. We use state of the art technology, computer simulations, supercomputers, artificial intelligence to understand better a very complex processes in human body and propose new devices and software for better diagnostics and therapy.

UMNE: Do you think that small countries have the potential, in synergy with diaspora, may reach the very top of science and its achievements?

FILIPOVIĆ, PhD: I think there is a lot of potential in small countries as well. Examples of this are Montenegro and Serbia, which are relatively small countries. Diaspora can help a lot, they just need to lend a hand and enable the conditions for them to return and continue fruitful scientific cooperation in small countries such as Serbia and Montenegro. This is actually where personal contacts and direct connections between scientists in different laboratories and teams are most important.

UMNE: What do you think is important for young researchers to be persistent on the path of education and science? FILIPOVIĆ, PhD: I would tell young people who want to do science to be persistent on that path despite all the difficulties and temptations that surely accompany them. Beauty of working on a scientific project is something that you cant find in any company, despite of the less money that can be made doing science. But we should invest in young researchers and help them persevere on that path. For example, we at the University of Kragujevac, have distributed over 200 apartments to young researchers and we are still preparing new plots for the construction of another 200 apartments. Solving the housing issue for young scientists is very important in order for them to focus as much as possible on scientific work and reach supreme results in their field.
