Gender Studies: Condemnation of Gender-Based Violence

The Gender Studies programme of the University of Montenegro strongly condemns the violent exposure of Mirjana Pajković’s private life to the public, as well as the attacks and threats directed at Vijesti journalist Jelena Jovanović.

These actions constitute a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and the safety of women in the public and digital spheres. The abuse of Mirjana Pajković’s privacy is not a “scandal,” but an act of gender-based violence in which a woman’s intimacy is used as a tool for public discreditation and social stigmatization. Such practices demonstrate the extent to which women’s bodies remain subjected to political and social power struggles.

Particularly concerning are the attacks on journalist Jelena Jovanović, who, despite pressure and attempts at intimidation, continues to perform her work professionally and responsibly. The attacks against her are not an expression of freedom of speech, but an attempt to silence her and undermine the public’s right to information. Female journalists who cover sensitive topics are especially exposed to gender-motivated attacks precisely because of their professional integrity.

Gender Studies reminds the public that the right to privacy and protection from gender-based violence are guaranteed by international conventions, including the European Convention on Human Rights and the Istanbul Convention. We call for the immediate removal of content that unlawfully infringes upon the privacy of individuals, institutional protection for victims of digital and gender-based violence, and a clear and unequivocal condemnation of attacks on journalists by the competent institutions. These are not “affairs,” but violence. This is not about private stories, but about public responsibility and the defence of fundamental human rights.
