National Erasmus + Office in Montenegro (NEO) carried out monitoring of the MARDS project titled Reforming doctoral studies in Montenegro and Albania – good practice paradigm. Monitoring visit of the project is a part of the usual procedure conducted by the National Erasmus + Office and realized by request of The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency in Brussels (EACEA). The participants of the meeting were from different structures including representatives of Montenegrin institutions – University of Montenegro, a coordinator of the project, University of Donja Gorica, Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Chamber of Economy, as well as professors, while interested students followed the meeting online and participated in the discussion.

The chairman of the meeting with the coordinator of National Erasmus+ Office Vanja Drljević was prof. dr Radovan Stojanović from the UoM, the coordinator of the whole MARDS project, while Vice-Rector for Internationalization, prof. dr Sanja Peković represented the UoM.

The purpose of the meeting was to gain an insight into the realization of the project in the period from that last monitoring and overall project realization until March 2021. Besides propositions for measures for improving the conditions of doctoral education in two countries, it is planned to open two multidisciplinary PhD programmes (schools) “PhD studies in Sustainable Development” at the University of Montenegro and “PhD studies in Economy and Tourism” at the University in Shkoder.

It is said that the project is going according to the plan. PhD school at the UoM is in the process of accreditation and has passed all instances (Council for qualifications, Senate of UoM and Ruling Board of UoM), while the final accreditation by the Agency for Quality Insurance of Higher Education is expected, upon which students will be enrolled.

Due to content, quality and real needs for this kind of study profile in Montenegro, a great number of students are interested in MARDS Programme, and if everything goes well, the beginning of the programme with the first generation is expected to start in October 2021. As usual, the first generation will have a paid scholarship.

The students from Montenegro will be able to study in Albania and vice versa, which is quite convenient, considering the proximity and friendly relations of these cities and countries. The EU partners of the project, University in Vienna, University in Zagreb, Banska Bistrica University and University in Maribor will also help with the study curriculum, mentorship and exchange.
