Danilo and Damjan: Thanks to Erasmus+ a distant city in Spain feels like home

Danilo and Damjan Nikcevic, students of the Faculty of Political Science of the UoM (Media studies and Journalism) spent a summer semester at the University of Cadiz.

“What had drawn us to choose Cadiz for Erasmus mobility was the fact that it is a city in Spain with beautiful beaches and numerous tourist attractions,” they said.

However, a stay in Spain exceeded their expectations.

“The first impression of Cadiz was astonishing. The old part of the city is known for its architecture and historic attractions in the style of seaside cities, narrow streets and beaches, while the new part is distinguished by the architecture of modern European cities and long sandy beaches,” students described.

Students were also impressed by the hospitality of Hispanic people.

“People in Cadiz are very kind and always willing to help strangers. They live for sport, especially football. Everyone in the city is a huge fan of the football club "Cadiz",” they said.

Applying for the Erasmus+ programme wasn’t complicated, thus, students, with the help of international cooperation coordinators, could easily submit all necessary documents.

Despite restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Danilo and Damjan were lucky to make Erasmus+ intercultural friendships.

“There were a lot of Erasmus students and everyone was connected via social networks. All students have a similar mentality, they all want to make friends and learn about everything new,” Danilo and Damjan said.

When it comes to the organization of the University of Cadiz, students explained that the University of Cadiz functions through their application, where students can find all necessary information (study material, email addresses of teachers, class schedule, consultations, home works, and exam terms).

Classes were held online due to the pandemic, but during the last month of the mobility, Danilo and Damjan attended combined classes.

Danilo and Damjan used their spare time for sightseeing in Cadiz and nearby tourist destinations.

The decision to apply for the Erasmus+ programme, as students say, made a distant Cadiz feel like their second home.

“An adventurous spirit, openness to new opportunities and experiences enabled us to enjoy Hispanic cities and meet many friends. By switching from our comfort zone to the unknown, we acquired a lot of beautiful memories,”they concluded.
