Story of a Student from the Faculty of Medicine: From First Encounter with Saarbrucken to All Benefits of the Student Life
Ever since beginning of the year II of studies, Nikola Ognjenovic, now a student of the year V of the Pharmacy Faculty of the University of Montenegro in Podgorica thinks about going on mobility. After presentation of representatives of the Faculty of Pharmacy from Saarbrucken, the capital of German federal state Saarland, Nikola decides to apply for the mobility program of the University in Saarland.
"I opted for winter semester as low interest of students. Good side of the stay in this winter is that I had all privileges as all other students i.e. possibility for a free course of German Language, I have the opportunity to find cheap tickets for traveling, the interaction is greater, I have the possibility to stay longer unlike the summer holiday. I think prolongation of studies for the reason of experience acquired here is definitely worth it", Nikola said.
First encounter with Saarbrucken
-First two weeks upon my arrival in Saarbrucken were very demanding since I came during the strike of bus transport. Since accommodation was rather distant from the University from the town center I had to walk for 15 km per day. Having in mind the fact that taxi is very expensive it was smarter to walk until strike stops. As far the University is concerned I encountered hospitality, organization where everyone knows the job doing it properly. People in the department for Pharmacy are fair, there is a family atmosphere, since they think this kind of atmosphere brings greatest productivity which I agree completely.
For a very short period of time I concluded that a great number of people from the Balkans lives here which was helpful for my adaptation. What is relevant is that we should respect the deal and be punctual which is much appreciated here. Additionally, you can feel team spirit and equality among people.
Cultures Worldwide in one place
-Cultural differences are very complex since on one place there are people and cultures from all corners of the world. In meeting people we usually discuss about culture and tradition and really each people is story itself. Common for all people there is that there are no racial divisions, there is appreciation and respect, everyone is equal that is not the case here in certain countries in the Balkans.
Good Practice to be implemented in Home Country
- Importance of quality education is high in Germany. They collapse old buildings unless it is in pace with modern conditions. For two years’ time new building of faculty is built so students would have optimal conditions.
Through communication in Germany, I found out about the budget of the faculty laboratory for chemical synthesis where everyday research is conducted. Budget covers all expenses regarding the laboratory.
I think these examples of good practice should be transferred to our country. It is great interest of colleagues for leaving our country however I think we should not leave forever yet the knowledge and experience should be implemented in our country so the conditions should be risen to the next level.
World destinations are several hours away and transport in Saarland is for free
Cities in Saarland are also interesting and one hour away from Saarbrucken. I would mention that transport is free. While registering in the municipality everyone gets free tickets and the ones with discounts for historic museum, cinema, zoo, theater. I go to a party sometimes on work days but nights out are not for me here so I prefer walk through the town and weekend travels.
Practical experience and Learning New languages
-When I graduate, I may proudly say that I acquired much experience when it comes to working in laboratory or practice that will help me in challenges ahead that I will encounter in the future.
I think my CV will be richer. Also, I will bring experience of English language and beginner’s German language that helped me in raising self-esteem.
Opportunity given only during studies
-I would recommend to all students the mobility program not to think much but to take part in new adventures without any regrets for prolongation of studies. This is special experience that definitely may not be acquired if you graduate in Montenegro within schedule and also this is the opportunity given only during studies giving new knowledge, meeting new cultures, travels, friendships…
