Ulysseus Days Titled “Navigating Pathways to a Sustainable Future” Held at the University of Münster from October 28–30, 2024

The event brought together 100 participants from European universities within the Ulysseus alliance.

On October 28 and 29, the official opening of the Münster Innovation Hub was held, accompanied by the event “Explore and Connect: Meet the Innovation Hub of Socio-Ecological Sustainability.” The activities of the hub in education, research, and transfer were presented, with a focus on sustainability through real and living labs. The event highlighted the University of Münster’s sustainable activities and its connection with Ulysseus partners.

On the third day, October 30, the R&I Conference “Sustainable Innovations” took place at the Center for Soft Nanoscience (SoN), hosting about 60 participants. The opening speech by Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Michael Quante initiated discussions on the moral rights of future generations. Throughout the day, presentations and parallel sessions were held on topics such as sustainable education, recycled materials, and technologies, fostering the exchange of innovative ideas.

The University of Montenegro was represented at the event on October 30 by Prof. Dr. Senka Šekularac-Ivošević, Vice-Dean for International Cooperation at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor, and Ana Ašanin, a second-year master’s student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Engagement with esteemed researchers, educators, facilitators, and advanced individuals from the European Ulysseus University in addressing urgent societal, ecological, and economic challenges of today was not only inspiring but also a key step toward achieving a sustainable future.

Prof. Šekularac-Ivošević delivered a presentation titled “Maritime Tourism and Well-Being of Residents: How to Foster Global Health?” During this presentation, she addressed several critical questions: What are the core challenges in the well-being of the maritime tourism industry? Who are the key players? What are the established rules? What does the future of the industry look like when social welfare and well-being are prioritized?

Additionally, as a panelist in the session “Transformative Education,” Prof. Šekularac-Ivošević shared insights on shaping future skills and educational pathways in modern education. On this occasion, the vision and practice of the University of Montenegro were emphasized as an institution that supports socio-ecological transformation, thereby equipping society to navigate toward a sustainable future.

Master’s student Ana Ašanin presented the startup Spectro Solutions and their AI system for detecting fires in open areas and landfills. In her presentation titled “Greentech Innovations in Early Detection Systems,” she highlighted challenges such as adapting to extreme weather conditions, internet connection stability, and reducing false alarms. She also underscored the importance of computer vision in reducing fire risks and preserving ecosystems, especially given the increasing frequency of wildfires.
