Azra Šoljanin, a Ph.D. candidate at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montenegro, successfully completed a research stay at prestigious universities in Lisbon and Porto, thanks to a scholarship awarded by the University of Montenegro. Her research in Portugal, a country with a long tradition of higher education, enabled her to enhance her knowledge and skills through collaboration with leading academic experts.

Under the guidance of internationally recognized professors Dr. Carlo Torre and Dr. Fernando Fernandez-Llimos, Šoljanin studied the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) concerning pharmaceutical waste management among students and practitioners in Portugal, with a comparative analysis involving countries from the Western Balkans.

"These opportunities are of immeasurable importance for any young scientist and provide a unique experience of staying at prestigious institutions abroad, serving as a solid foundation and encouragement for conducting future research," Šoljanin explained. She emphasizes that this years call has also caught her attention and that she will strive to submit the highest quality application possible. The all is part of the program to support the development of science and the training of personnel at the University of Montenegro, as well as to fulfill the objectives of the Universitys Development Strategy.

In addition to her stays at the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the University of Lisbon and the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the University of Porto, she took the opportunity to establish contacts with significant institutions and organizations focused on health ecology.

"I’m particularly pleased that these two faculties rank very high on the Shanghai Ranking, and my research was approved and consented by the Ethical Committees of both institutions, conducted in accordance with all principles and respecting the Helsinki Declaration and applicable EU Directives, making me proud to share the results at scientific meetings and conferences," Šoljanin added.

She believes that her work will contribute to improving the management of pharmaceutical waste, which has a noted negative impact on the environment in many studies, and aims to raise awareness about its proper management.

"Plans for the near and distant future include intensifying collaboration with our diaspora in Portugal, which, although not large in number, is of a very high quality, to implement projects primarily related to the knowledge transfer of environmental bioremediation. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Scientific Committee of UCG, which recognized my aspirations and intentions, my mentors, supervisors abroad, and colleagues from Lisbon and Porto, who generously shared their knowledge, experiences, and literature," emphasized Ph.D. candidate Šoljanin.

Discussing Portugal without mentioning its beauty is impossible.

"This is a magical land of fado and pastel de nata. Though we are thousands of kilometers apart geographically, I enjoyed magical moments of hospitality, song, magnificent nature, and very tasty traditional cuisine, which continually reminded me of the many similarities with our own region."
