Professor Avi Mendelson: Large language models like ChatGPT have benefits, but also risks

Today at the University of Montenegro, world-renowned computer science and engineering expert, Professor Avi Mendelson from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, delivered a lecture that captivated the academic community. The topic of his presentation was "Enabling Technologies for (Huge) Large Language Models – Will They Continue to Evolve?"

Professor Mendelson thoroughly explained what large language models are and the technologies behind them, highlighting how they differ from traditional programming. In his talk, he emphasized that these systems learn from examples we provide and that the challenges associated with controlling learned information must be carefully addressed.

"Large language models are not just a technological advancement; they represent a revolution in how we approach processing and generating information," said Mendelson. He added, "Although the challenges are significant, especially regarding energy efficiency and ethical dilemmas, the potential these systems offer is immense."

Professor Mendelson is a member of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has extensive industry experience, including many years at Intel and leadership roles at Microsoft R&D in Israel.

Following his lecture, Professor Veljko Milutinović took the stage, discussing the applications of DataFlow supercomputing for deep analytics of big data, tying back to the theme of significant technological achievements and their benefits to the local academic community.
