JRC flagship report titled “Values and Identities – a policymaker’s guide”

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) will publish next week a flagship report titled “Values and Identities – a policymaker’s guide”. Recent years have seen high levels of polarisation, rapid spread of misinformation, a decrease in willingness to compromise, and a historic low in satisfaction with or even outright attacks on democracy. Politics itself is increasingly turning on a new axis. On top of traditional economic conflicts, cultural values and identity issues have become just as or even more important for policymaking and politics today.

JRC flagship report presents:

  • the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on values and identities from an interdisciplinary perspective,
  • important insights for policymakers to adapt their work to the challenges of our time, including a dedicated toolbox section.
  • findings from a dedicated Eurobarometer mapping out the values and identities across the EU, including agreement with EU values as defined in article 2 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU).

The report encompasses following chapters:

  • Why values and identities are important to policymaking and politics
  • Understanding the values and social identities of EU citizens
  • Identity politics, polarisation and values diversity
  • Policymaking fit for the 21st century
  • Future outlook and research agenda

To hear more about the reports’ findings and what can be learned from a social and behavioural perspective on values and identities to improve policymaking and regain trust in democracy, please register for the launch event which will take place on 17 November from 14:00 to 15:30.
