Faculty of Philosophy

Biography

Dragan Jakovljević, PhD (born 1953 in Zaječar, Timok Krajina, Serbia) has been a full professor of philosophy (epistemological and ethical disciplines) at the UoM since 1990. Apart from teaching at the Study Programme for Philosophy, he has also taught methodology at the Study Programme for Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy.

He graduated from the University of Belgrade where he obtained BA in Philosophy and history of art, and finished his postgraduate studies in Theory of Science in Baden-Württemberg, at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Mannheim. He defended his doctorate under the supervision of a well-known German methodologist and theoretician of rationality, Hans Albert, who, together with Karl Popper, laid the foundation for the philosophical school of critical rationalism and the concept of open society. He took part in a number of specialisation programmes in the field of methodology, ethics, philosophy of law, theory of religion, etc. at academic institutions in Austria and Germany. He maintains a continuous international cooperation with a number of distinguished scholars from European academic centers (Linz, Lucerne, Düsseldorf, Bucharest, Graz, Sofia, Vienna, Wroclaw, etc.), and he has published numerous thematically diverse papers in German, Austrian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Croatian, etc. journals and books of proceedings. His key studies include Leonard Nelsons Rechtfertigung metaphysischer Grundsätze der theoretischen Realwissenschaft (Nelson's Justification of Methaphysical Principles of the Theoretical Science of Reality) Frankfurt on Maine, Bern, and other in 1987, Erkenntnisgestalten und Handlungsanweisungen (Shapes of Cognition and Instructions for Acting, published by the Central European Institute of Philosophy, Nordhausen 2016), Religions and Values 2006, Knowledge, Tolerance, Faith Podgorica, 2014. He is currently working on the book entitled Metaphysische Annahmen und das Vorwissen der Vernunft, which is scheduled for publishing in the second half of 2019, as well as a collection of debates in ethics entitled Value Orientation, which is scheduled for publishing at the beginning of 2020. He has recently published an article in the collection of papers dedicated to the work of Karl Popper published by Springer, a distinguished European publishing house.

Although close to Popper's school of critical rationalism within the framework of which he acquired his methodological education, he does not embrace any specific philosophical school as a general departure point for his considerations. Rather, he uses certain specific points of view related to the ethical issues, theory of values, theory of growth of scientific knowledge, methodology of social sciences, etc. They do not necessarily overlap with certain school systematics; rather, they cross its borders while, in some cases, representing the stance of the author himself. Marking the 60th personal jubilee, an internatinal collection of papers entitled Forms of Thinking (Denkformen), Belgrade 2013, was published in various languages with articles submitted by more than twenty renowned European and some South European scholars and it is catalogued by university libraries in Germany, Austria, USA, Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia, etc. His research is focused on a vast array of subjects including the general theory of knowledge and methodology, i.e. philosophy of science, ethics and theory of values, philosophy of religion, theory of culture, systematic scholarly criticism.

He is a full academic member of the Wilhelm-Röpke-Institute (Germany). He collaborates with one of the champions of the Erlang school of constructivism, Jürgen Mittelstrass, as well as with distinguished European ethicist, Dieter Birnbacher. He took part in a number of specialization programmes at academic institutions in Graz, Frankfurt, Salzburg, Konstanz, Vienna, Dusseldorf, Regensburg, etc. His overall work includes more than 80 scholarly and professional articles with a significant share of publishing in European journals and collections of papers, of which some have been indexed in international professional bibliographies for specific subject areas.
