European Commission approves the University of Montenegro Project for Development, Monitoring, Recognition, and Digitalization of Extracurricular Activities

The European Commission, through the Erasmus+ programme – Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE), has approved funding of the project “Development, Monitoring, Recognition, and Digitalization of Extracurricular Activities at the University Level (2025–2028)”, coordinated by the University of Montenegro. The project has been recognized as a strategically important initiative for the development of higher education in Montenegro.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with Montenegrin higher education institutions, key national strategic partners, and international partners. It also serves as a satellite project of the European University Alliance Ulysseus, of which the University of Montenegro is a full member. Among the international partners are prestigious European institutions: Université Côte d’Azur (France), University of Jaén (Spain), and University of Zagreb (Croatia).

The main goal of the project is to enhance quality of student life and modernize higher education in Montenegro through the development, monitoring, and recognition of extracurricular activities as an essential part of the students’ academic experience. Within the framework of the project, student clubs will be established at all higher education institutions in Montenegro, bringing together young people in diverse fields – from sports, arts, and culture to business, entrepreneurship, science, innovation, volunteering, and mental health. In this way, students will receive institutional support to develop their potential, initiatives, and talents outside the classroom, yet within the academic community.

The project also envisions the establishment of an institutional and national framework for recognition of extracurricular activities through ECTS credits, thereby formally integrating the value of extracurricular engagement into Montenegro’s education system.

A special emphasis will be placed on strengthening student engagement within local communities and fostering closer ties between universities and their surrounding environments, thus contributing to the development of a socially responsible, active, and solidarity-oriented student body.

The Rector, Vladimir Božović, PhD, stated that this project represents an important step forward in improving the student experience and building a modern higher education system in Montenegro.

“Through this initiative, the University demonstrates that it values the knowledge and skills students acquire beyond the classroom,” Božović emphasised.
